Just after 5 pm Friday, Roganville Volunteer Fire Department was called out to assist Newton VFD on a woods fire in the vicinity of 242 Cr 3040 in Newton County. Soon, the Texas Forest Service was also called out.
The fire appears to have begun on Private Rd 7060 and moved through the wooded area between the two roads.
Newton Fire Captain Melanie Smith said, "2.7 acres burned and it took fire fighters 2.5 hours to control the blaze. It appears that a burning stump was the cause of the fire and then it spread into the woods."
