Volunteers Bring Hope to Jasper and Newton Counties After Severe Storms

Nearly a year after the destructive storms and flooding events of April 2024, Jasper and Newton counties continue the journey toward recovery. Two dedicated volunteer groups—Harvest Call and the Mennonite disaster relief team known as The Nomads—have been working tirelessly to rebuild homes severely impacted by last year's disasters.
The local coordination behind these efforts is led by the Jasper Newton Long Term Recovery Group (JNLTRG), a locally established organization activated specifically during disasters. Since 2016, this dedicated group identifies and vets affected families, ensuring those most in need receive critical support and resources.
Active members of the JNLTRG include:
Olen Bean, Chairman
Billie Jordan and Sue Downing, Co-Executive Directors
Madge Jones, Financial Officer
Karen Smith and Connie Hughes, Intake and Case Managers
The JNLTRG, meeting regularly at the First Baptist Church of Kirbyville, relies solely on generous donations from organizations such as Salvation Army, Nehemiah’s Vision, Catholic Charities, Somebody Cares America, and individual local contributors.
Together, Harvest Call and The Nomads are actively repairing and rebuilding almost 50 homes identified by JNLTRG, ensuring families have safe, sanitary, and secure housing.
Alongside rebuilding and construction, the Church of Christ Disaster Team is actively supporting families by providing essential household items such as appliances, beds, and furniture.
Since its inception nearly a decade ago, the Jasper Newton Long Term Recovery Group has positively impacted approximately 500 homes throughout the two-county area—proof of the lasting difference a community-centered approach can make.
“Our efforts only happen thanks to compassionate volunteers and generous donors,” said Connie Hughes, Intake and Case Manager. “We welcome anyone who wants to get involved, whether through volunteering, donating, or simply learning more about our mission to help local families rebuild.”
