Updated information on the lockdown and arrests at Kirbyville High School today

Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard has released additional information regarding the arrest of two students at Kirbyville High School earlier today.

Havard said that the students, a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old had decided to trade a hand gun for a vape (smoking device). Havard said that the .40 caliber Smith and Wesson automatic pistol was brought to the school by the 14-year-old and the trade did take place.

At some point the children's parents learned about the plan and quickly notified the school and law enforcement was called. It was at this point that there was an immediate lockdown of the facility.

Once the Jasper County Sheriff's Deputies and Kirbyville Police Officers arrived, they began searching for the gun.

Havard said that the 16-year-old student ran from the school with the weapon, but was apprehended by a Jasper County Deputy who also took possession of the gun.

Havard said that both students were arrested and transferred to the Minnie Rodgers Juvenile Detention Center in Beaumont. They were both charged with

3rd degree felonies.
