As of 8:30 p.m., the Texas A&M Forest Service reports the fire has been fully contained. The blaze affected 65 acres. No injuries or structural damage have been reported, and the cause is still under investigation.
Original Report:
A large forest fire is actively burning in Newton County near Burkeville this evening, prompting a multi-agency response.
At approximately 5:15 PM this evening East End Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to assist Newton VFD and Burkeville VFD in fighting a rapidly spreading 150-acre forest fire. The fire is located on FM 692 near County Road 2110, in a rural, heavily wooded area just outside of Burkeville.
According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, the fire remains at 0% containment at this time. Crews are working to control the blaze, which is being fueled by dry conditions and dense timberland in the area.
There is no word yet on evacuations or damage to property, but residents are urged to avoid the area and allow emergency personnel full access to respond. Smoke may be visible from surrounding communities, and local drivers are advised to use caution.
This is a developing story, and The East Texas Banner will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
