Out of control grass fire brings up a really good point
Just after 1 pm today, the Kirbyville Volunteer Fire Department was called out to 1897 W. MLK in Kirbyville for an out of control grass fire.
KVFD 2nd Assistant Chief, Jeromy Richardson said that there wasn't much to the fire. It was small, but it was just too much for the homeowner to get under control.
When we think of 'out of control grass fires', we often think about heavy drought. Of course with all the snow this week, drought is not a problem, but KVFD Fire Chief Greg Ellis had this to say. "Well, here’s the problem. It’s not really dry but the grass on top of the ground is dead from freezing weather. If someone leaves a fire unattended with a little wind blowing it’s out of control quickly."
It is unknown if the homeowner left the fire unattended, but still it's good to know that it can happen, even in the conditions we currently have.
Ellis added, "It’s really tough for us to get off the road or driveways now because the ground is really soft so we just ask to please be careful with outdoor burning and do not leave unattended."
