Calls To Services (October 30, 2023, to November 5, 2023): The Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) answered 64 calls to service.
Jail Transports:
Newton County had 9 jail transports.
1 from NCSO to JCSO, 3 from JCSO to NCSO, 1 from NCSO to Plane State Jail, 1 from NCSO to Byrd Unit, 2 from NCSO to Gist State Jail, 1 from JCSO to Hospital.
Jail Population: We currently have 22 inmates in the following Jails, 15 housed in Newton, and 7 housed in Jasper.

UPDATED PRESS RELEASE: Eric Edward Brown W/M (38 YOA) has been arraigned on an Additional Charge of Aggravated Assault Public Servant (F1 – Bond Amount is $100,000.00)
This additional charge is a result of further investigation and the extensive injuries sustained by one Deputy who was involved in the struggle at the time of Brown’s arrest. Original Drug Arrest Details: On October 27, 2023, a Newton County Deputy initiated a traffic stop on County Road 4181 for a vehicle equipment violation. K9 Bruce alerted on the vehicle and the driver was detained and a vehicle search was initiated. During a search of the vehicle drug paraphernalia was located. The driver attempted to take the evidence from one of the Deputies’ hands and then grabbed his legs and they went to the ground. A struggle ensued and both Deputies were able to successfully place handcuffs on the suspect. One of the Deputies sustained injuries and he and the suspect went to St. Elizabeth Hospital to be checked out. The suspect was cleared for incarceration and is currently in Newton County Jail.
The suspect, Eric Edward Brown W/M (38 YOA) from Buna was arraigned on October 30, 2023, and is currently charged with the following charges:

Resisting Arrest Search or Transp (MA) Bond: $5,000
