Drowning at Scrappin Valley Lodge: On September 25, 2024, searchers recovered the body of a man investigators believe drowned in Newton County. At approximately 5:15 p.m., searchers recovered the victim in a large pond behind Scrappin Valley Lodge off Highway 87 north of Burkeville. The victim is identified as Decorian Shaquil Smith, 31 YOA, from Call, Texas. Decorian Smith was boating prior to being reported missing in the water at about 5 p.m. Tuesday the 24th. First responders searched the pond until dark and resumed the next morning on Wednesday. Newton County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the search by Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens, Beauregard Parish Sheriff's Office, and local volunteers from Burkeville VFD, Toledo Bend VFD, and the Blue Line Advocates (BLA). We want to express our sincere condolences to the Smith family and friends.
Calls To Service (September 23, 2024, to September 29, 2024): The Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) answered 49 calls to service.
Jail Population: We currently have 14 inmates in the following jails;
10 housed in Newton, 3 housed in Beauregard, and 1 housed in Jasper.
Jail Transports: NCSO had 4 jail transports:
1 from NCSO to Beauregard, 1 from JCSO to NCSO, 2 from NCSO to doctor appointments.
