Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby to step into a new position within the County on January 1st
January 1st will be here before we know it and all newly elected officials will take office.
Newton County Sheriff-Elect Colton Havard will take the place of current Newton County Sheriff Robert Burby, and Burby will likewise be stepping into a new position within the County.
Newton County Judge Ronnie Cochran said that he recently asked Sheriff Burby to consider taking the position of Constable Pct. 2, replacing the current, exiting Constable, Jeff McCoy who has accepted a position in Sabine County.
Sheriff Burby said, "I was asked to serve and I've said yes. I've been serving the public for 50 years. 20 years in the Air Force from 1974 to 1994, and 30 years in law enforcement. Anywhere I'm asked to serve, I will."
Cochran added, "I talked to Colton (Havard) and we both agree this would be a great fit. Robert (Burby) is a good man and a dang good Officer. He lives in Pct 2 and this will be a good continuation of his service for the community."
Burby added, "It's my precinct, my County, and my home. Anything I can do to help, I'm going to do it. I know people will benefit from my experience and wealth of knowledge so it's a win-win for all of us."
Cochran said that he initially brought the idea to Havard on November 15th, and on Wednesday of last week, he presented it to the Commissioners Court for a vote and Burby was elected. His term as Constable Pct 2 will end in 2026 and at that time Burby can decide whether or not he wants to run for re-election.
