National Medal of Honor Day
National Medal of Honor Day is observed on March 25th each year to “foster public appreciation and recognition of Medal of Honor recipients”. The Medal of Honor is awarded to those who have distinguished themselves “conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity” above and beyond the call of duty. In 2024, National Medal of Honor Day will be observed on Monday, March 25th
100 years ago Friday, the 8th of March, the first submariner received the Medal of Honor
Torpedoman’s Mate 2nd Class Henry Breault was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1924 for heroism and devotion to duty during the sinking of the submarine O-5.
Their service is often silent, but valorous nonetheless, a century ago, a Navy submariner became the first of his kind to receive the Medal of Honor.
President Calvin Coolidge presented Torpedoman’s Mate 2nd Class Henry Breault the military’s highest military decoration on March 8, 1924.
