Update - Motorcycle Accident in Jasper Sends Two to Hospital; Identities Released

According to Jasper Police Department, the accident occurred around 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025. James Earvin Cooper and his passenger, Lawana Sue Smith, both of Pasadena, Texas, were traveling southbound on a 2017 Honda motorcycle in the far-right lane of U.S. Highway 96 South.
A 2011 Chevy Silverado, driven by George Marion Vanzandt of Jasper, was exiting a private driveway near O’Reilly Auto Parts and failed to yield the right of way. In an effort to avoid a collision, Cooper took evasive action, causing the motorcycle to slide onto its side in the highway.
Both Cooper and Smith sustained possible injuries and were transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Just before noon on Saturday, emergency crews responded to the scene of a vehicle-versus-motorcycle accident in front of O’Reilly Auto Parts, located at 1369 South Wheeler Street.
Jasper Police Department and Jasper County Sheriff’s Office arrived quickly, securing the scene while EMS personnel transported two individuals to Jasper Memorial Hospital. The extent of their injuries is currently unknown.
While initial reports indicated that another vehicle may have been involved, that detail remains unconfirmed at this time.
