Louisiana’s Sulphur High School Wins MLF Abu Garcia High School Fishing Open on Sam Rayburn Reservoir Presented by Simms

BROOKELAND, Texas. (Sept. 30, 2024) – The MLF High School Fishing team of Jackson and Carter Lanclos of Sulphur, Louisiana, representing Sulphur High School, brought five bass to the scale weighing 15 pounds, 5 ounces to win the MLF Abu Garcia High School Fishing Presented by Tackle Warehouse Open at Sam Rayburn Reservoir Presented by Simms.


A field of 58 teams competed Saturday in the no-entry fee tournament, which was hosted by the Jasper County Development District. In MLF High School Fishing competition, the top 10 percent of teams competing advance to the High School Fishing National Championship.


The top five teams that advanced to the 2025 High School Fishing National Championship are:


1st: Sulphur High School, Sulphur, La., Jackson Lanclos and Carter Lanclos, five bass, 15-5      

2nd: Alexandria Senior High School, Alexandria, La., Corbin Dunn and Clint Turrentine, five bass, 13-11               

3rd: Sulphur High School, Sulphur, La., Orin Byrd and Sydnee Byrd, five bass, 13-9     

4th: Sulphur High School, Sulphur, La., Justin Ackel and Gavin Burnett, five bass, 13-8        5th: Huntington High School, Huntington, Texas, Caden Alexander and Brise Hazelton, five bass, 13-8               


Rounding out the top 10 teams were:


6th: Sulphur High School, Sulphur, La., Bodhi Trahan and Bryce Youngblood, five bass, 12-7  

7th: Highland Park, Dallas, Texas, Carson Falk and Dylan Sorrells, five bass, 12-5         

8th: D’Arbonne Woods Charter School, Farmerville, La., Bradley Herring and Ethan Thrash, five bass, 12-5                

9th: Vidor Pirate Fishing Team, Vidor, Texas, Braden Norton and Caden Williamson, four bass, 12-5 

10th: Kats Fishing Team, Conroe, Texas, Brayden Griffin and Austin Sponseller, five bass, 12-3            


MLF Abu Garcia High School Fishing presented by Tackle Warehouse tournaments are free, two-person (team) events for students in grades 7-12 and are open to any MLF and TBF Student Angler Federation-affiliated high school club. The top 10 percent of teams at each Open event, along with the TBF High School Fishing state championships, advance to the High School Fishing National Championship.


The 2025 Abu Garcia High School Fishing National Championship & World Finals will take place June 25-28, 2025, at Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees in Grove, Oklahoma. The High School Fishing National Champions each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice and advance to the 2025 MLF Toyota Series Championship to compete as co-anglers.
