Jasper County, Texas – The Jasper County Office of Emergency Management is reporting the theft of a federal flood monitoring gauge installed on County Road 773, south of Buna.
The device, which is the property of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, was part of a regional flood monitoring network critical to public safety. These gauges provide real-time data to help emergency personnel respond quickly during flood events and play a vital role in protecting life and property throughout Southeast Texas.
The theft of this equipment is being reported to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department and Homeland Security for investigation. Tampering with or removing federal emergency monitoring equipment is a serious offense and can result in criminal charges.
“This kind of technology helps save lives,” said Billy Ted Smith - Emergency Management Coordinator. “Removing or damaging it puts the community at risk. We urge anyone with information to come forward.”
Anyone with knowledge of the incident is asked to contact the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department at Jasper County Sheriff’s Office at 409-384-5417.
