JASPER, TX- At 3:25 Monday afternoon, Jasper Volunteer Fire Department was called out to the strip of land between Lowes and Walmart for a brush fire.

A spokesperson with the department said, "We had 14 personnel and 3 apparatuses deployed. Thankfully we gained control before it reached the top of some pine trees."
Judy Miller and Prentis Eaves were on their way through town when they saw the smoke. Miller said, "We couldn't tell if Walmart was on fire or some of those apartments back there but there was a smoky haze everywhere! There were fire trucks and police vehicles all over the place."
Miller was able to snap a few photos of the haze on her way through the area.
The JVFD Spokesperson added, "Please do not discard cigarettes or other items with the expectation they will simply go out."
