A Newton County man has pleaded guilty to a Jasper County Shooting
Cameron Hartsfield
Corrected article:
The now 20-year-old Cameron Hartsfield, is one of four Newton County men and four Jasper County men indicted in the April 23, 2023, prom night after party shooting on Cr 263 in Jasper that left nine people injured. That case still is waiting to go to trial.
According to Jasper County District Attorney Ann Pickle, the case that Hartfield pleaded to occurred just moments after the prom after-party shooting.
As we reported last year, after the initial shooting, the two rival groups left the party and were shooting while chasing one another in vehicles on Valley Dr off Bevil Loop in Jasper.
Jasper Police Lieutenant Garrett Foster told ETB last year, “At least one of the two individuals at this time is believed to have returned fire at the four suspects already arrested involved in the after-prom party shooting.”
Hartsfield pleaded guilty to Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon as well as Deadly Conduct on that secondary case on Tuesday, October 22nd at the Jasper County Court House.
Hartsfield has been sentenced to five years for the Assault charge and eight years for Deadly Conduct to be served concurrently. He also has two additional charges of engaging in organized criminal activity. He is also pleading today in Tyler County on a separate charge.
Hartsfield, his brother Cheston Hartsfield, Tracy Hickman and Tyler Porter, all of Newton, were indicted in June of 2023. The other three young men are scheduled to appear in court on November 5, 2024.
Three additional people were charged from the Jasper area last year. Their current status is not available. ETB will research and update our readers once we have that information.
The Jasper group involved in the shootings will be prosecuted by the Newton County DA Courtney Ponthier.
